Now with the internet and social media like Facebook and other similar resoures the sportspeople of the world have come together in a way that allows for interactions on a scale never seen before.
Times past anglers relied on publications, bait shops and fellow fisherman for their information on new techniques and products. Now with the internet and social media like Facebook and other similar resoures the sportspeople of the world have come together in a way that allows for interactions on a scale never seen before. Example: I catch a fish then post in detail how fish was caught, where it was caught and with whom I was with when the fish was caught, than upload a photo to Facebook and/or other web site. And now thousands of other like-minded anglers get to see my great accomplishment of the day and I get to enjoy the great accomplishments of other anglers. With this greater contact to the world wide community of sportsmen and women I have been learning of techniques and lures and fish species from around the world that I may not have known of in past eras of a slower pace of communication between fishermen.

Do I need this type of instant information to be a better angler? No, I could just be as happy with the old ways of hanging out at bait shops and local watering holes to get my latest updates on the latest lures or knots maybe even a new hot hole on the lake. But I’m a person of the 21st century and I now go online with many hundreds of thousands of fishing enthusiast of all types. Maybe a man from the Ukraine has a knot I have never tied before or a lady bass pro from Australia gives me a “good catch mate” on a fish I just posted on my web page. These kinds of interactions with strangers have an intimacy I find comfortable just as I would at the boat landing discussing the day’s events with others I don’t know. The long distances are closed and I think that the world gets a little friendlier which gives me a better understanding of my fellow anglers the world over because of the latest technologies. So if you’re reading this and have a story to tell or something else you’d like to share here my ears are open to all Angling Quests.

I sit here glancing out the window of my office. It seems to me trees are changing from luscious greens to beautiful shades of reds, oranges and yellows. Just before my eyes Fall is here. I must say it is my favorite time of the year. All the outdoor lovers’ activities are in full swing or soon will be.

The fishing in October is remarkable, with salmon, trout, walleye, perch, pike and even cisco waiting to be caught and become great filleted table fare. Bass have become super hungry to fatten up for the approaching winter. Smallmouths are the true stars to me, they seem to try and fly as they shoot out of the water like a Trident missile. And I can’t forget the water wolf, or muskellunge. When I was young, an old fisherman told me if you can just get one muskie to take your bait you’ve had a great day. I’m sure that rule doesn’t apply to Lake Erie though. If the brutes I’ve seen at fishing shows, along with some exciting recounts of muskie action, are any indication, Lake Erie is the place to head for Fall muskies. The past couple years in autumn, colossal muskie have been caught right here in the Upper Peninsula on the Big and South Manistique Lakes. A big muskie mounted on my log cabin wall is on my bucket list.

A steady falling of leaves this time of year heralds the start of small game and bird season. Grouse and woodcock are delicacies that can’t really be described adequately. You must eat this delectable meat to experience this delight. With time and more leaves falling, my hunting success should only get better. Ducks along with geese are flying south now, so I must make time for the blind. And with the right recipe these game birds will look wonderful on the plate.

Deer season has begun with bow hunters getting the first crack at some venison. Rifle season will soon be here and an army of blazing orange will be hitting the woods and local watering holes. That huge 12 pointer on my trail cam? You’ll soon be mine! Then there is black powder season for those not opposed to a shiver or two along with some cold snow down the back of the neck. And if you can’t bag a deer, make sure you give squirrel a try. Mother Nature has given us a pretty tasty animal in that nut lovin’ woods dweller. Fall can be a really happy time of year!

Squirrel Bait Pile

So, get out and get ready for the fall and early winter if you haven’t already. Do a little more exercising than normal. I hope I never have to carry a fallen sportsman out of the woods. By getting that gear all tuned-up, cleaned, and working well, you’ll be glad when that trophy buck gets in your sights! You’ll really be pleased that you’ve done your duty and spent some extra time throwing lead down range at targets too. We owe it to the beasts we hunt.

One more forgotten preparation in the fall – make sure all your line your reels are in good shape. Most guys put new line on in the Spring only. Just think about it, a summer of wear and tear can be the bad luck that lets the big one swim away.

Please, Please, Please! Leave the woods and water better than you find it. Leave only footprints. I am appalled by the amount of trash I find when I head out fishing or hunting. It’s not that much to ask to “NOT BE An ECO-PIG”! You’ll get a warm fuzzy feelin’ when you pick up after an eco-pig too, I promise! One more important thing – please take a kid fishing, hunting, or both. They really are our future in these outdoor sports we enjoy so much. It’s a fight against the digital world, but a worthy one. Our lives, and especially theirs, will be better off for it.

A few weeks ago Team LureSecure got to spend some quality time with a few of America’s finest. We got to hang out for the day at the 2nd Annual Tight Lines for Troops charity fishing tournament held in Manistee, Michigan. An event that shouldn’t be missed – whether you’re a Vet or Captain on one of the boats, or someone on shore welcoming the fleet home.

Tight Lines for Troops is the brainchild of Captain Bob Guethardt from Renegade Charters out of Manistee. Bob decided he wanted to give a little something back to the men and women who have made the sacrifice to serve our country. Thus, Tight Lines for Troops was born. It’s an event that brings numerous Charter boats together for the day, so our Vets can go big lake fishing (for Free!), and be honored for what they’ve done for our country. This year the event was held on the weekend of May 21, and was very well attended.
We met up with Captain John Schwartz and Captain Jeff Schwartz of the Thirty Pounder III, our ride for the day, at 5:00 am. The we headed out for Seng’s Marina on Manistee Lake to pick up our fishermen. At the marina we loaded the guys and headed out the channel to line up for the shotgun start. When everyone was in place all engines were shut down and the Coast Guard boat came out with bag pipers onboard playing Amazing Grace. It was pretty cool!

After the bag pipers finished their tribute, it was time to crank up the engines and make the mad dash for the fishing hole. I don’t know if you have ever experienced a shotgun start, but if you haven’t, it is quite a sight to see. 45 large boats taking off at the same time for a high speed run to their favorite spots.

We reached our spot, and while Captain John and Captain Jeff were busy getting things ready, we had a chance to visit with the Vets that were onboard. Joining us on this “mission” were Tarran Frye – USMC veteran of Iraq, Mike Darrow – USAF served in Panama and South America, Gary Dykstra – US Army Vietnam veteran. And we can’t forget Hershey, Tarran Frye’s service dog, that was provided by Stiggy’s Dogs.

Once we found out a little about our passengers we got down to the business at hand – catching fish! We started our first troll and within 10 minutes we hit the first fish! Unfortunately, it wasn’t a good hook-up and we missed it. We kept trolling and missed a few more fish. Finally on the last run, before we had to head back to the marina, we had a good solid bite and the guys didn’t miss this one. The skunk was off! The boys got the fish on the boat and it was time to head back for the weigh in.

As we headed back up the channel and around the pier head, the Vets were greeted by Rolling Thunder, the Patriot Guard, and several local residents. They were flying the Stars and Stripes and saluting the Vets. It was an awesome sight and I’m sure the guys appreciated it!

We got back to the marina, disembarked and headed for the weigh in. The winning boat was Get-N-Bigger with a 24 pound 6 ½ ounce King, 2nd place went to the Jeanne Marie with a 21 pound 6 ounce King, and 3rd place was Obsession with a 15 pound King. It was a great day for everyone and hopefully we can do it again next year.

Fishing is relaxing and fun! Everyone can learn to fish. Fishing is also a great way to experience the out-of-doors by itself or in combination with boating, picnicking, camping, hiking, and viewing wildlife. Fishing isn’t a dangerous sport, but as with any activity, especially activities held in the ever-changing out-of-doors, there are some safety tips which should be followed. Here’s just a few:

Use Tackle Safely

Always handle fishing tackle responsibly. Make sure to look behind you before casting so that your hook will not catch a power line, tree, or another person. Don’t leave your tackle lying on the ground. Someone may trip and fall on it, step on a hook, or even break your tackle. If a hook is deep inside of a fish’s mouth, don’t put your hand inside. Instead, use some kind of a hook remover to carefully remove the hook. If this doesn’t work, cut the line as far back as you safely can to release the fish. Always properly store your hooks and tackle before moving your equipment . We recommend our product LureSecure. To truly keep hooks and lures under safe control.

Prepare Appropriately

Always wear sunscreen on exposed areas like your face, neck, and hands. The sun ‘s rays can damage your skin and give you a painful burn. Wear a hat. Hats keep your head cool in the summer and warm in the winter. They also can help keep the sun out of your eyes and protect your head from hooks during a stray cast. Protect the only eyes you have by wearing some kind of glasses. Sunglasses protect your eyes from hooks and the sun’s harmful rays. Polarized sunglasses also help you see below the surface of the water to see fish and other objects. Shoes should always be worn whether fishing on shore, in a boat, or wading in the water. Stray hooks, glass, sharp rocks, and other objects on shore and in the water could cut your bare feet. In a boat, shoes designed to keep your feet from slipping in a wet boat could help prevent you from taking an unexpected dip into the water. Always dress for the weather and be prepared for sudden changes. Whenever around water, small children should wear a Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device (PFD) that fits properly.

Basic Boating Safety

Make sure all required equipment and a first-aid box are in the boat before going fishing. When an emergency happens, you don’t want to have to go back to shore to get what you forgot. Know how to properly use the rescue devices. Stay seated as much as possible while in a boat. Never overload a boat. Know how much weight your boat can safely carry and always evenly distribute your load. Do not use drugs or drink alcohol when boating. Over half of all drowning victims were using alcohol or drugs. Remain a safe distance from low water dams and other restricted areas. Keep your eyes on the weather. Leave the water before storms arrive. If on the water and caught in a storm, make sure your life jacket is on and cautiously travel to shore and beach the boat. Travel slowly in shallow areas and areas of flooded trees. When traveling at night, be sure your running lights are on so others can see you.

I didn’t know Mark Martin (Pro Angler) from a hole in the wall until last Friday. As I stated in my last post, he was the only Pro to make sure I had a partner to fish with on our media day. This morning I drove over to Winneconne to catch the launch of Day 3(actually day 2 of fishing) and got a chance to talk with Mark before he headed out. Mark is one of those “good guys” you don’t hear much about, especially in the Pro ranks of any sport. In the world of tournament fishing, Mark stands out, taking pride in being a role model and ambassador of the sport like no other. I’m trying not to judge all professional anglers or professionals of any sport, but the bad taste I had in my mouth last week did taste pretty nasty.
For a fair amount of Pro angler’s that may have been it. He and I talked for a few minutes; he showed me what caught him the 12lbs the day before and discussed his plans for today. He also proceeded to tell me that without a rattle added to his jig and the addition of scent, his 6 fish may have been zero fish. In mark’s world, there is no real reason to hide tricks, tactics or ideas. He’s open with what he does and doesn’t do. How many local fishermen give up that sort of information without the blink of an eye? Let alone a Professional looking to cash in on a 1st place paycheck of $30,000.
Tied off to the bridge, and within arm’s length of a Radtke barge, I started to talk to him a bit more about why this spot was better than any other spot. He didn’t hesitate to explain to me that the bridge and barge were slowing up the current. With the level of the water so high, this “eddy” was a break from the rushing water. Not news to those who fish the river year round, but any break in the current will usually hold fish.
LEARN THE SIMPLE RULES TO SUCCESSFUL REDFISHING

One look at a redfish and you know it’s built for brute strength. With its blunt face and broad-shouldered look—it’s a fish with a fight even before it’s hooked. Unlike the speckled trout with its long, sleek look and ability to throw hooks, the redfish is honed to test your tackle and strength. So to many anglers, the redfish rules the marsh.

When we talk about redfish, fall seems to be the primary season that comes to mind. Thus, it has been said that redfish come inside during this season. The simple fact is redfish have been inside the whole time. The reason for thinking otherwise is that during summer months, when tides are often high, redfish migrate into shallow ponds off the beaten path. As a rule, how many anglers do you know that fish these areas during that time?

On the other hand, north winds force tides lower during the seasons of fall and winter, consequently causing redfish to move out into deeper channels, bayous and canals. Here redfish are more accessible to most anglers, leading them to believe that they have “moved in.”

In regard to “inside” redfishing, perhaps the furthest season from your mind is summertime, particularly if you’re a marsh angler. This is because most anglers would much rather be out on the breezier, open bays and beaches in pursuit of fish. But according to professional guides, redfish can be easy targets even during summer months, if you know where to look. Veteran anglers generally find them in the marsh, over the reefs, and in shallow ponds.

However, among renowned redfish anglers, it is an established fact that limits can be had in the months of July and August just as commonly as October or November. But the choicest months for those in the know are May or June when the weather is more moderate in comparison to wintertime. This is when there’s a lot less wind and a lot more redfish to be found, as many redfish enthusiast can attest to.

As a rule, redfish are predictable to weather changes. In comparison to trout, redfish are much more tolerable of very cold weather. Hence, during such conditions redfish continue to feed in their usual haunts, while trout and other species head for deeper waters with lockjaw.

This, of course, doesn’t mean that redfish are impervious to weather changes. Such things as cold temperatures, dirty water and low salinity levels can cause redfish to react either favorably or not.

To underscore the point, redfish are known to bite like there’s no tomorrow a day before a front, and even while a front is moving through. The opposite, though, occurs a day after the front when high pressure starts to build. This the dreaded time when redfish get a bad case of lockjaw, and you would swear that the marsh is devoid of them–only to be made a fool of as they show off their backs in shallow water.

To avoid such harassment, follow the rule of the pros: it is best to fish for redfish the second day after a front passes, when the tides are returning water to the bays. This is the time to look for the first good falling tide after a front. During such conditions be at your favorite spot early, and you can be assured the redfish will have your arms throbbing.

Any redfishing veteran is well aware that severe cold fronts can be an angler’s most welcomed delight. This is when redfish compact into tight schools, and not necessarily in very deep water. A good example of this is what takes place in dead end canals in very cold weather. The water in these areas are frequently less than eight feet in depth, yet numerous redfish are caught in this relatively shallow water when temperatures plummet.

Another condition that will bring redfish together for easy target is an extremely low tide that flushes them into deeper spots in the marsh. Once the school is located, a redfishing extravaganza can take place.

Redfish seem to feed best on falling tides; but redfish take feeding on low tides to an extreme. Ideal tides are those at normal stage or a slight bit below normal high that just starts to fall. As the water leaves these marshy, interior ponds it is noticeably clean. Near the end of the falling tide the water becomes murky as the lower parts of the ponds drain, reaching their muddy bottoms. As a rule, then, to give the redfish the best shot at your offering, be at your favorite pond or drainage opening when the tide first starts to fall.

Ideal places to fish are at the mouths of cuts where waters empty into larger areas, such as lakes, lagoons and bayous. As a rule, redfish prefer to position themselves right down stream from the openings. As the waters pass through, redfish have at their disposal an assortment of delectable items: crabs, minnows, and much bait fish—including your bait.

Fish the shorelines of canals, marsh ponds, lakes and anywhere the water is as shallow as six inches in depth. Redfish often pursue crabs and minnows that lurk around these grassy, shoal areas.

During periods of low tides or when the weather is very cold, look for deep holes near shallow water which make for excellent territory to try. Many successful marsh redfish anglers prefer using live minnows when available, or second choice, artificial plastic minnows. The live bait is either fished under a popping cork or sliding sinker rig. The latter is mostly preferred when fishing brisk moving tides in deeper water.

Though live minnows work very well in catching redfish, biologist that have surveyed redfish stomach samples, most frequently find small crabs as part of their main diet. This is not unusual, they claim, as the shallow marshes are nursery grounds for such like crustaceans, and redfish are masters at locating and feasting on them. There’s no doubt about it, when it comes to marsh fishing, the red fish rules!

For weeks now we’ve been leaking pictures and info about the upcoming release of the “Generation 2″ LureSecure. With this post we’ll be providing additional information and giving you a better idea of what you can expect when these unique products hit the market.

First off, they won’t be called the “Generation 2″ LureSecures. We used that term internally to keep track of the project, and to separate facts and discussions regarding the original LureSecures from the new LureSecures. Once the new units hit the market, they will be called LureSecure Lure Wraps – as they always have been.

The new & improved LureSecure is made from PE (polyethylene) based materials. Although PVC is less expensive to use, it has numerous negative effects on the environment and living organisms. From manufacture to disposal, PVC emits toxic compounds, so we chose NOT to make an outdoor-use based product from something that could harm that which we rely upon for our fishing enjoyment.

The primary material in the new LureSecure originated in today’s high-tech medical industry. This material is used for items such as IV bladders, inflatable immobilizing and compression devices (think temporary casts), therapy packs and numerous other unique medical items because it’s very flexible and resistant to punctures. It comes in clarities from crystal clear to “orange peel”, various densities, and numerous colors. We’re using the thicker, orange peel variety without color so our Pros can pre-rig with confidence – they’ll know what lure they’re using, but their competition won’t. This material also blocks UV rays, so lures retain their color or glow capability when stored within a LureSecure.

As fellow fishermen, we know that every now and then we put our gear away damp, if not wet. We also realize our product is used by fisherman fishing in salt or brackish water. We’ve included a unique military technology in the new LureSecure Lure Wraps for this very reason. Running down the center of every LureSecure is a strip of Inhibitor corrosion protection material. This premium “NANO-VCI” technology has been field tested in the harshest conditions. By using LureSecures to secure or store your lures and gear, hooks and other ferrous metals are protected from rust and corrosion.

Even the construction and design of the new LureSecures is aimed at maximizing the benefits you’ll gain from using them. We’re still using industrial grade hook & loop closures, but now we’re using a wider version for added security. The new LureSecures are constructed using a revolutionary new technology – Radio Frequency heat sealing. Unlike other lure wraps, the materials that make up a LureSecure are literally welded together – no glues, no stitching and no mechanical devices.

We listened to your input and made some unique improvements. Tabs have been added to the new models, so they’re easier to open – whether you’re wearing gloves or have pudgy fingers. Two of the RF welding jig holes act as drains, so your lures can be put away wet. We minimized packaging, thus minimizing environmental impact. We made the new LureSecures larger too, at each and every size level.

We want to make sure you’re happy with the new LureSecures, so we’ve put them through vigorous testing. The new LureSecures remain flexible and intact, whether you’re fishing in sub-zero conditions or sweltering heat. They can be folded, and will remain robust when returned to their normal shape. And they’ll stay on your rod at high speeds, even when cold. How do we know this? We let our Pro Staff “play” with some advanced copies, and we’ve been using them in the field for months. We even tested them in the frigid cold of Michigan’s Upper this past winter, attaching them to a rigged up rod and hanging it our our truck window as we drove at highway speeds.

LureSecure lure wraps are still manufactured in the good ol’ USA using American made materials. We know how difficult times have been recently, so we’re doing everything in our power to help the U.S. economy and our fellow American sportsmen. So every dollar you spend on LureSecure lure wraps stays right here in the United States.

As this post is being typed, the new LureSecures are in the manufacturing process. They’ll be available soon, here on our blog, and in your favorite sporting goods stores. They’ll be priced affordably and conveniently packaged in pairs. As soon as the new LureSecures are available for purchase, we’ll let you know here, as well as on Facebook and Twitter.
